The Greenville County Library System traces its beginnings to 1921 when the library consisted of some 500 volumes in a vacant store room on East Coffee Street. Thomas F. Parker, a local businessman and philanthropist who initially garnered community support for this public institution, served as Chairman of the Board. In 1923, Mr. Parker purchased a three-quarter-ton truck, and had it fitted with glass doors, thus introducing the first ever Bookmobile in the South to meet the needs of Greenville County’s mill communities.
Today, the Library System has grown to twelve locations. And the Bookmobile still makes weekly stops delivering books and fond memories. The Library remains dedicated to providing free access to materials, experiences, and resources to communities throughout Greenville County.

Welcome to Hughes Academy of Science and Technology. The mission of the Middle School is to provide a safe and positive learning environment, while striving to address the changes, pressures and uncertainties that middle school age student experience. Our school program is designed to recognize the uniqueness of this growth stage that takes students from childhood to adolescence. Our primary commitment is to promote individual excellence in academics, fine arts, athletics and other areas of student interest.
Hughes Academy is organized into two teams within grade level wings where the intellectual, social and emotional growth needs of students are met in small learning communities. This provides a gradual transition from the self-contained classroom of the elementary school to the departmentalized seven-period day of the typical high school. Active, hands-on learning activities, and the use of technology, increases interest and challenges students to search for answers. Related Arts courses give students opportunities to experience subjects such as foreign language, art, music, band, computer applications, and physical education. We also offer a variety ot technology courses such as Web Publishing, Mobile Applications, Video Game Programming, Electronic Music, Graphic Design, and Gateway-to-Technology.
We strongly encourage parents to be involved in their child’s education. A great deal can be accomplished if we work together to enhance learning. Parents are invited to visit the school, call with concerns, and attend the evening programs presented throughout the school year.
The mission of The Chandler School is to empower talented and bright students with dyslexia or other related language-based learning diferences to become effective learners. By addressing both learning needs and intellectual strengths, we promote a love of learning that inspires our students to become strong self-advocates
and confident lifelong learners prepared for the intellectual and social challenges of academics and life.
All students have the capacity to learn. Smart children with language-based learning differences can reach their academic potential through proper instruction within a positive and supportive environment. We guide our bright and capable students to build and master skills by emphasizing their individual strengths while remediating areas of improvement.
The Chandler School curriculum meets all South Carolina Independent School criteria with a course list including literature and language, math, science, social studies, drama, art, keyboarding and physical education.
Our curriculum is based on the principles of the Orton-Gillingham philosophy, a structured, sequential, multi-sensory and phonetic approach to teaching reading and spelling. Daily tutorials are individualized and build on the typically strong cognitive (thinking) skills of the dyslexic student. All Chandler teachers and tutors are Orton-Gillingham trained.
All our classes employ a kinetic/hands-on approach to learning. We offer electives structured around the concept of Multiple Intelligences. This concept asserts that rather than one mode of intelligence, there are nine abilities or intelligences: Linguistic, Mathematical, Musical, Visual-Spatial, Bodily-Kinesthetic, Logical, Naturalist, Interpersonal, and Intrapersonal. Each of our electives emphasizes specific Multiple Intelligences and exposes students to a variety of ways to learn, explore, and develop their unique talents.
